India’s English education system has long focused on grammar, comprehension and written performance, while giving little attention to whether learners experience English as a language they can genuinely use and claim as their own. This article examines the gap between examination-based proficiency and meaningful language use, drawing on research into language, identity, class and caste. It explores the idea of “language investment” and proposes Language Identity and Agency as a dimension of English assessment. The article argues for an approach that recognises oral communication, self-expression and learners’ relationships with English alongside conventional measures of grammatical accuracy and written competence.

What we’re seeing here is the otherwise quite conservative and traditionalist scholar of the #dharmashastra PV Kane throwing his support behind the efforts of #ambedkar with respect to the super-controversial Hindu Code Bill.
Ambedkar cited Kane extensively (albeit critically) and Kane also read Ambedkar’s “The Buddha and His Dhamma” and referenced it. I’m trying to learn more about their relationship, especially the overlapping time they spent together in the Rajya Sabha.
