The Literary Genius of the Bhagavad Gita: Chhanda

The predominant Chhanda used in the Gita is the Anushtup. It comprises 4 padas each with 8 varnas

Trishtup is the other chhanda in the Gita (about 10 percent) and has four padas with 11 varnas each.

There are a few other requirements in both about which length of varna in which position but that would require a lot of detail

We see Trishtup appearing when the emotion or content becomes more emphatic or intense, larger or sustained

Both come to us from the Veda. Anushtup is the Chhanda used predominantly in the Ramayana and Mahabharata

Why is this important? They contribute to the unique structure of the Veda and the Gita which is kaleidoscopic and constantly engenders new insights and revelations.

Vedic Chhanda: Sangeeta Alankara

What do I mean by Sangeeta Alankara? Let me try to exemplify

Let us take the phrase युक्त आसीत मत्परः

It appears in the Gita 2.61 and 6.14. Did you know this recurrence? And why so far apart? That is the mother of all punaruktis.

Remember, chapter 2 focuses on Sankhya and Karma yoga. Bhakti has not really been brought in yet. Are you sure of this? Sri Krishna has already slipped in a phrase early on that he will develop an entire Darshana on in the later revelations of the Gita. But Bhakti will appear as a triune path from the seventh chapter onwards only. Yes, he will combine jnana, karma and bhakti much later but he has has already brought in the note much earlier like a master musician playing with you in chapter 2

He does this often. Padas recur like phrases of music, like the play of seed sounds and seed motifs throughout the Veda and the Gita. I give the example of the Gita because it is easier to handle in its complexity. In the Veda this becomes a larger symphony of sound and meaning that is beautifully composed in an orchestral manner

Rig Veda: The Kaleidoscopic Structure

How is the ever-shifting evolving eternally-fresh experience of the Veda or Gita achieved? You see, the Veda and the Bhagavad Gita are created in a unique design where each unit is self-sufficient and self-arranging

Say, take the phrase अ॒ग्निमी॑ळे पु॒रोहि॑तं from Rig Veda 1.1.1. It is complete in itself, पूर्ण

When you first read it it has a clear meaning or so you think

Once you reach the end of the Agni Suktam and begin to delve deeper into the mysterious sense of the whole Suktam, suddenly the first pada starts growing into a different sense. The units arrange with each other in a dynamic manner, like the notes in a symphony, like the fractals of a vast design. And as you grow in understanding after reading the first mandala or anuvaaka then again the meanings of each unit change.

So we don’t have a fixed narrative but an open-to-interpretation mosaic where each unit is Poorna and the entire design is Poorna. The complete units are often repeated in newer combinations or situations so that they cross reference themselves and change in hue every time you read them. The structure is not linear but multilayered and polymorphic like a diamond crystal or isomorphic and holographic

The recovery of Indian Knowledge Systems is not only about recovering ancient texts and traditions. It is also about engaging with modern Indian thinkers who sought to encounter modernity without severing it from the civilisational foundations of Bharat. Stepping Into the World of Sri Aurobindo is an important contribution to that continuing conversation.

We have done a great disservice to our civilization by not including Sri Aurobindo in our educational curriculum. Highschool and college curriculum should include readings from works of Sri Aurobindo.
