Asif said his book is influenced by the layers of physical history he experienced while walking the streets of Lahore. “What do we think is of historical significance?” Asif said. “We are used to writing histories of nations and the states and great individuals, tumultuous events, but it’s very difficult to write about a small plaque on a wall being defaced by neglect over 50 years.”
Asif said he utilized oral history to add complexity to the history of nation-states and capture the voices of those who left in the wake of Lahore’s post-colonial violence, which destroyed one-seventh of the ancient city. “If we are to write anti-national histories, if we are to do the work of displacing a nation-state as the kind of locus primus in our intellectual work, then we have to think about storytelling in the realm of what earlier generations were talking about — folk memories or oral history,” Asif said.

Essay on the Provisional Utility of Matter for Consciousnesss: Persistence without Personality
This article examines whether persistence after disincarnation can be thought without personal survival. Drawing on the Lurianic concept of reshimou (the trace remaining after tsimtsum) and Spinoza's concept of finite mode, we define personality as a habitus of affection, a necessary imaginary narrative of the conatus. We argue that a trace can persist as an orientation without a personal bearer, borne by the single substance. This framework allows a critical rereading of Sri Aurobindo's notion of transformation of matter and proposes to think absolute unity as a non-dual tripartition: matter, spirituality and love.
