Isha resides in everything

 Collated by Tusar Nath Mohapatra

Spent the last weekend at Puducherry for the @PondyLitFest and was quite mesmerised by its spiritual depth and scenic beauty.

Pondicherry’s relationship with Sri Aurobindo is not merely a story of a man who came here in 1910. It is the story of how a place can become a meeting point between history, culture, thought and consciousness.

For forty years, Pondicherry became the ground from which Sri Aurobindo explored what it meant to be Indian - not simply as an identity, but as a civilisational idea. Here, his political nationalism gradually opened into a larger vision: the evolution of human consciousness, the synthesis of the spiritual and the material, and the possibility of India contributing something distinctive to the future of humanity.

The Ashram that emerged around that work transformed Pondicherry in ways that reach far beyond its physical streets. Education, literature, art, music, theatre, physical culture, publishing and spiritual practice became woven into its social fabric. Today, the Ashram remains a living cultural institution, while Auroville -founded by The Mother in 1968 from the vision associated with Sri Aurobindo -extends that experiment into an international community.

And perhaps that is Pondicherry’s deeper gift to Bharat.

A small coastal town, shaped by Tamil, French and Indian histories, became a place where India could look inward without turning away from the world.

Sri Aurobindo’s Pondicherry reminds us that Bharat is not merely a geography. It is an idea still becoming rooted in its civilisational past, yet continually asking what it can become next.

The Literary Genius of the Upanishads: Isha 1

The first word Isha is usually taken to mean one who is the Lord, the Master. Isha is also taken as one who cuts through the Maya or controls and rules it. Isha resides in the Maya or reclines in it.

When we try to understand with the help of later Matrika Vidya, we see that the ई varna implies the desire or first movement of the Pure Consciousness or Shiva. We come to the same insight from Matrika Vidya that Isha is the primeval Lord of the Universe

Sankara’s commentary on the Isha Upanishad may be a little difficult to understand. Swami Vivekananda and Sri Aurobindo had a simple and direct approach to the Isha which is easier to grasp

The Literary Genius of the Upanishads: Isha 1

The root vasa- has three different meanings according to Sri Aurobindo: to cover, to wear or to inhabit

Sankara takes ‘to cover’ as the meaning which leads him to all sorts of difficulties since, eventually, he wants to uncover Isha

Sri Aurobindo interprets vasyam as part of the Unanishadic realization that the Isha resides in everything

We can see that the Upanishads are complex works requiring attention from the students regarding the various meanings of each shloka

Sanjeeb Mukherjee argues that justice must take precedence over both sustainable development and formal democracy. He treats sustainable development as a limited correction to the deprivations, inequalities, and ecological damage of industrial civilisation, and holds that neither liberalism nor socialism in practice has produced a just order.

We assume prison punishes only freedom of movement, but Federica Coppola argues that's a misidentification. The Associate Professor of Criminal Law at IE University Law School makes the case that imprisonment functions as a kind of manufactured exile, severing not just physical freedom but the self's capacity to exist in relation to others.

Coppola pushes back against the Kantian idea that personhood is a self-contained bundle of autonomy. The deepest harm of incarceration, she argues, is the loss of belonging. Tap here to read her full article. iai.tv/articles/the-s…

Erich Fromm, Ernst Bloch, and Arthur Koestler

Collated by Tusar Nath Mohapatra My life as ideology
Yes, there is a profound philosophical and thematic resonance between Erich Fromm and Ernst Bloch. While Fromm operated primarily as a psychoanalyst and social psychologist and Bloch as a speculative philosopher of utopianism, both thinkers shared a distinct intellectual ecosystem that merged heterodox Marxism, Jewish messianism, and an unyielding commitment to human hope. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Their shared perspective serves as a counterweight to the deep pessimism that characterized other members of the Frankfurt School (such as Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer). [6, 7]

1. The Ontology of Hope and Utopianism

The most visible structural bridge between the two thinkers is their treatment of hope not as a passive wish, but as an essential element of human reality: [8]
  • Ernst Bloch's "Principle of Hope": In his magnum opus, The Principle of Hope, Bloch argues that humanity is driven by the "Not-Yet-Conscious" and the "Not-Yet-Become". For Bloch, daydreams, art, and fairy tales contain a Vorschein (anticipatory illumination) of a better world. [1, 9]
  • Erich Fromm's "Revolution of Hope": Fromm similarly defends hope as an objective requirement of psychic life. In The Revolution of Hope (1968), he asserts that genuine hope is an active, structural condition of human growth—the opposite of passive waiting or fatalism. Fromm explicitly praised Bloch’s work for bringing this focus back to the forefront of critical thought. [1, 8]

2. Secularized Jewish Messianism

Both thinkers were deeply anchored in the German-Jewish intellectual revival of the Weimar Republic. They extracted the radical ethical core from theological traditions and translated it into revolutionary theory: [5, 10]
  • Prophetic Tradition: Fromm and Bloch both looked back to the Old Testament prophets. They viewed prophetic messianism not as an apocalyptic end to history, but as an historical mandate for universal peace, justice, and the complete transformation of the human condition. [4, 11]
  • Exile and Liberation: For both men, the central theme of human history was the migration out of "Egypt" (idolatry, alienation, and oppression) toward a state of spiritual and physical liberation. [12, 13]

3. Radical Humanism vs. Capitalist Alienation

Fromm and Bloch were leaders in the mid-20th-century revival of Marxist Humanism. They rebelled against the mechanical, sterile interpretations of Marxism pushed by Soviet dogmatism, choosing instead to focus on the individual: [1, 12]
  • The Critique of Having: Fromm argued that capitalism forces humans into a "Having Mode" of existence, where identity is tied to consumption and ownership. Bloch similarly critiqued how commodity fetishism narrows human consciousness and deadens our imagination. [9, 14]
  • The Realization of Potential: Both believed that socialism's ultimate goal was not just economic redistribution, but the liberation of the human spirit so that people could transition into a productive "Being Mode", where our creative and emotional capacities are fully realized. [9, 12]

4. Overcoming the "Pathology of Normalcy"

Finally, their resonance shows up in how they diagnose society's psychological stagnation: [12]
  • Bloch’s Non-Contemporaneity (Ungleichzeitigkeit): Bloch recognized that people often carry unresolved psychological, mythic, and cultural layers from the past into the present, which can be hijacked by authoritarian forces if progressive movements fail to provide an emotional vision for the future. [15]
  • Fromm's Social Character: Fromm provided the psychological mechanics for this idea. He showed how modern societies create an "authoritarian character" or a "marketing character" that acts against its own objective needs out of a fear of isolation and freedom. [14, 16, 17]

Ultimately, Fromm and Bloch resonate because they refused to let critical theory become a philosophy of despair. They insisted that an accurate diagnosis of human suffering must always serve the goal of human awakening. [7, 8]

If you want to explore their connection further, let me know:
  • Are you interested in a specific text comparison (e.g., Fromm's To Have or to Be? vs. Bloch's Principle of Hope)?
  • Would you like to look closer at how they differed from other Frankfurt School theorists like Adorno or Marcuse?
  • Are you exploring their influence on liberation theology or ecological thought? [1, 2, 4, 6, 18]

Another brilliant book I finished recently. Shows how totalitarian regimes use systematic brainwashing techniques and mass psychology to imprint their subjective truth on their citizens. The Rape of the Mind is what ultimately leads to 1984. One is the cause, the other is effect. If you want to read something closer to 1984, I'd suggest Darkness at Noon by Arthur Koestler.

This book by James Ladyman, titled Understanding Philosophy of Science, offers a profound introduction to the philosophy of science. Ladyman explores the nature of the scientific method and the knowledge it produces. His discussion in this work covers critical debates between scientific realism and antirealism, as well as key topics such as induction, falsification, and scientific revolutions. He also specifically addresses the problem of induction raised by David Hume, while evaluating how science strives to achieve objectivity and empirical justification.

Everything Begins with a Choice: Artificial Intelligence, Good and Evil, and the Challenge of Human Transformation

by David Andersson countercurrents.org/2026/09/everyt…
