Kalki runs the Sahodari Foundation empowering the transgenders

“Transgenders are extremely talented and celebrating arts is a part of our life,” says Kalki, who runs the Sahodari Foundation. With funds through the government welfare board, Kalki started the Liberation Performing Arts Troupe in December 2009 with 25 transgenders like her who had the passion for music. Her troupe, which has a combination of music, theatre and dance performers from poor family backgrounds, showcases folk and tribal music of not just Tamil Nadu but also from Africa and America. “We have bought instruments for the performance through many foreign sponsors and friends I know at Auroville,” says Kalki, whose goal is to change the stereotype images of transgenders.

Dear friends,
Do you know that the Transgenders are the most neglected and stigmatised people in our society? They are completely marginalized and pushed to the extremes. While some of them live a dignified life owing to education and family acceptance, many of them go for begging and sex work.
See what a project like Sahodari, which is run by a few transgender women, which has no money, not even an office of its own, can do to transform the lives of an invisible community. Lovingly, Kalki aurokalki at gmail.com About Kalki Kalki's blogs

7 Apr 2008 ... Through Sahodari Foundation, my dream project, I believe in working with the Indian youth for getting the rights we deserve. The youth of today are the future leaders and policy makers of tomorrow. Awareness about this marginalised community in our society is absolutely an important task.
Discriminating the transgendered people exists even in some of the biggest academic institutions in India. Its a shame that even the inteligent youth, the toppers, aren't aware of the struggles of our community.
